Celebration Of Life for Mr. Willie Mitchell, Sr.
Willie Mitchell Sr. was born on January 12, 1938, in Richmond Hill,
Georgia to the late Louis Mitchell Sr. and Mabel Brown Mitchell.
Willie was the third oldest of nine siblings. Mr. Willie Mitchell Sr.
earned his eternal heavenly rest on Monday, October 30, 2023.
Willie graduated from Richmond Hill Georgia School System. He
also received his certification and license in cosmetology and as a master barber; fulfilling his dream of living in New York Willie moved as a successful master barber and entrepreneur. Later, he moved some of his family up North to New York; where he mentored many of his family members to succeed. In 1968, Willie and his brother Henry relocated to Atlanta, Georgia in pursuit of a lasting legacy for their family, founding the Mitchell Brothers Barbershop.
He was not only accomplished in his professional life but also a proficient huntsman and fisherman. He loved spending his free time outdoors where he thrived.
Willie was preceded in death by his father Luis Mitchell Sr. and mother Mabel Brown Mitchell and five siblings: Louis Mitchell Jr., Frank Mitchell, Francis Mitchell, Ruth Mitchell and Henry Mitchell.
Willie leaves to mourn his passing two children, Courtney Mitchell-
Day, Willie Mitchell Jr. and adopted sons Morris Blige and Lionel Cross; Son-in-law Ashbea Day and Daughter-in-law Jamila Mitchell and eight grandchildren Nehemiah Mitchell Day- 17, Ashvae Alexander Day- 9, Asher Elijah Day- 6, Willie Mitchell III- 6, Ariah Naomi Day- 7
months Aaliyah D. Jackson- 20, Yanna M. Price- 17, Taahj A. Price- 14; three brothers, Joseph (Mary) Mitchell of Savannah, Georgia; Alonzo (Kate) Mitchell of Atlanta, Georgia and Benjamin (Dana) Mitchell of Richmond Hill, Georgia; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, colleagues and friends.
For over 60 years, Willie was a renowned and dedicated activist,
becoming a pillar of justice in his community – especially for the
South Atlanta Business Association. He also respected and
enjoyed nature. He enjoyed hiking, camping, storytelling;
and a knowledge of history par excellent. Mr. Mitchell was an
amazing and dedicated father in every aspect of his children's life.
He took pride in their upbringing, and they cherished his teachings
about life. Mr. Mitchell's greatest achievement was being an
amazing father and making sure his children felt it, knew it and owned
it. He was also an outstanding Grandfather-AKA DAN (a nickname
given by his grandson Willie Mitchell lll). He was also a father
figure to countless youth in the Southwest Atlanta area; giving so
much of his life to serving his community. All who knew Mr. Mitchell
will tell the story of a great man with an infectious laugh and an
amazing heart. His standards and principles gained him the
friendship of some of Atlanta's most influential people.
Willie Mitchell Sr. will be greatly missed, and his legacy will live on forever.
Celebration of Life Services for Mr. Willie Mitchell will be on Thursday, November 16, 2023, 1:00 PM at Salem Bible Church, 2283 Baker Rd. NW, Atlanta, GA 30318.
A public viewing will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, between the hours of 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM in Elizabeth's Chapel of Alfonso Dawson Mortuary. Atlanta, GA. A public viewing will be held on Friday November 17, 2023, from 3-6:00pm at the Chapel of Bynes-Royall 204 West Hall St., Savannah, GA. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Saturday November 18, at Bryan Neck Baptist Church, Richmond Hill, GA. Interment Bryan Neck Baptist church cemetery.
