Roxcena (Jackson) Lewis

Mrs. Roxcena “Roxie” Jackson Lewis was born on January 8th, 1937, to Ms. Laura Quarterman in Summerville, SC. She departed this life on May 28, 2026, in Augusta, GA.  The family collectively decided very early in her life that she would be raised by her late aunt Mrs. Alma Mitchell affectionately known as "Mother".  She became a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond Hill, GA where she was baptized, participated in the youth choir, and the youth usher board. The family identified early that she had a passion for learning. A family friend recommended she be enrolled into a private school.  As a result of this recommendation, the family pooled their resources together and enrolled her in St. Mary's Catholic School in Savannah, GA. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic school from kindergarten to eighth grade.  In 1953, she was enrolled into St. Pius X Catholic High School in Savannah, GA and graduated in 1956.  At St. Pius X, she played on the female varsity basketball team and developed life-long friendships with Mrs. Williemae Hall, Mrs. Mercedes Thomas, and Mrs. Richardean Gresham.  Additionally, she participated in local civil rights movement activities of the day in and around Savannah, GA like many of her peers.  

Upon graduation from St Pius X in 1956, she enlisted in the United States Navy as a Hospital Technician serving from 1957 to 1961 at US Navy Hospital St. Albans, New York.  After being honorably discharged from the United States Navy. She returned to Savannah, GA and enrolled in Savannah State University where she majored in Education. During her time at Savannah State University, she met and began to date Allen Lewis, Sr, a US Marine stationed at Paris Island Marine Corps Training Center in Buford, SC.  In 1965, she graduated from Savannah State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and obtained employment as an elementary school teacher.  On February 16,1966 she married Allen Lewis, Sr. in Pembroke, GA.  Shortly after, she and her husband moved to Camp Lejune, NC where they would reside from 1966 to 1969.  It was during her time at Camp Lejune, she gave birth to Allen Lewis, Jr. in 1966 and Alvin Dwayne Lewis in 1969.

In 1969, she and her family returned to Savannah, GA where she obtained employment as an elementary school teacher in Pooler, GA.  In 1971, she joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc through the Alpha Theta Zeta Chapter in Savannah, GA before moving with her family to Robins Air Force Base in Warners Robins, GA.  She completed her Master of Arts degree in Education from Savannah State University in 1973.  From 1974 to 1980, she and her family moved to Athens Air Force Base in Athens, Greece, Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in Myrtle Beach, SC, and back to Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, GA.  She obtained employment as an elementary school teacher at every location where the family resided and earned her Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Ball State University during this time.  She became a member of First Baptist Church on Garmon Street in Warner Robins, GA upon her return to Warner Robins. She truly enjoyed being a member of the gospel choir, attending bible study, and Sunday school. 

 In the ensuing years and decades, Roxcena transferred her membership to the Epsilon Tau Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in Macon, GA. She initiated into the Prince Hall Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Jurisdiction of Georgia, Central City Chapter #46 Warner Robins, GA, became a lifetime member and a supporter of their youth group. She assisted in chartering the Xi Omega Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc in Warner Robins, GA. She became a lifetime member of the Savannah State University Alumni Association in Savannah, GA.  A charter member of Warner Robins Chapter #35 of the Montford Point Marine Association Macon/Warner Robins, GA, and a lifetime member of the Montford Point National Marine Association. She is a member of the St. Pius X Catholic High School Alumni Association in Savannah, GA.  She was a faithful and dutiful member of each organization until the day of her passing.

In 2000, she retired from Northside Middle School in Warner Robins, GA after 30+ years as an educator and guidance counselor.  She spent her free time caring for her mother Ms, Laura Quarterman until her death, designing her dream home, and assisting her many organizations in achieving their goals.  She and her late husband would travel to visit family, friends, and attend organization conventions throughout the United States. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren whether they took them on road trips or remained at home.  Additionally, she enjoyed raising funds for her many organizations’ scholarship programs, visiting casinos, and taking cruise line trips with her sisters, nieces, and nephews.

Roxcena, was proceeded in death by her mother Ms. Laura Quarterman (Warner Robins, GA), her aunt Mrs. Alma (Louis Campbell Deceased) Mitchell (Savannah, GA), her husband Allen Lewis, Sr (Warner Robins, GA); her two brothers Mr. Lawrence Quarterman (Cynthia, Miami, FL), Bernard Campbell (Savannah, GA); her grandson Antonio Venchasio Flagg-Lewis (Evans, GA). She leaves to cherish her memories two sons Dr. Allen (Sylvia) Lewis, Jr. (Little Rock, AR) and LTC(RET) Alvin Dwayne (Consuela) Lewis (Evans, GA); four sisters Qwendolyn (Lewis (Deceased)) Grant (Savannah, GA), Terry Heggs (Savannah, GA), Carlotta (Clarence) Scott (Savannah, GA), and Shiela Jackson (Savannah, GA); three grandchildren, Dondrea Raquell Lewis (Columbia, SC), Laklin Miles (Breelan Holt) Lewis (Fayetteville, NC), and, Allen "Trey" Lewis III (Little Rock, AR); one great grandchild Brielynn Rielle Lewis (Fayetteville, NC) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, goddaughters, godson, and friends.

Memorial Service will be held 1:00pm Thursday June4, 2026 at First Baptist Church, 210 Garmon Street, Warner Robins, GA 31088. 

Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00am Saturday June 6, 2026, at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 200 Daniel Sidin Loop Rd., Richmond Hill, GA 31324. Interment Jackson Memorial Cemetery, Richmond Hill, GA.

Public viewing 3-6:00pm Friday June 5, 2026, at The Chapel of Bynes-Royall, 204 West Hall Street, Savannah, GA 31401.
