Mrs. Pinkie W. Henry was born in Groveland, GA on July 26, 1926 to Beauregard and Martha Ware. Her biological parents died before she was 10. Her Aunt Pinkie Jane Ware Richardson and James Richardson adopted her as their own. They became "Mama and "Papa"
She attended Savannah Elementary schools and graduated from A. E. Beach High School in 1944. She matriculated at Fort Valley State College and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 where she became a member of the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority Inc.
She taught in Lowndes County and commuted for several years; then she began a position at Pembroke High School in Bryan County. She was named Teacher of the Year at Pembroke High School in 1959.
Her hard work, leadership abilities and tenacity led to a Special Education teacher at Beach High School. She taught at other Chatham County Schools and retired from Gould Elementary school in Savannah after serving as a dedicated educator for over 40 years.
She was an excellent speaker and speech writer. She was often recruited by various Churches, Woman's organizations and Clubs to participate as the main speaker at their major events.
She was a lady of many talents. She loved to travel, cook, crochet and of course Shop. You could often catch her dressed to the nines in her heels and accessorized from head to toe;her hats were her favorite. She took great pride in her appearance and was always a humble but classy lady.
She was a committed Christian and served as an active member of Abyssinia Baptist Church for more than 60 years. She was on the a Deaconess Board, Missionary Board and Pastor's Aid Committee member. She was a Bible study, BTU and Sunday School Teacher for more than 50 years. She served as the Harvest Day chairperson many times and was an avid Senior Choir member. She was a true servant of the Lord.
Mrs. Henry was an active member of Naomi Lodge No. 30 Order of Eastern Star until her husband's death.
On Sunday September 6, 2020, she gained her Angel Wings and transitioned from this Earth to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in passing by her husband, Angus Henry, her mother and father, Pinkie Jane and James Richardson and her loving Aunt Lillie Foreman.
She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy, her devoted God daughter, Vernita Jackson of Atlanta, GA, sister-in-law, Lou Alice Henry of St. Petersburg, FL, cousins, Rosalyn Stokes (John), Gloria Campbell, Hilda Foy, Will Foy of Atlanta, GA and Hulen Ware of Savannah, GA, a niece, several nephews as well as a host of friends and acquaintances.
Graveside services will be held 10:00 am Saturday September 12, 2020 at Evergreen Cemetery. Pastor Marc Williams, Eulogist.
