John's Profile of Life
John Wesley Smiley, III was born on January 20, 1945 in Savannah, Georgia to John and Alvenus Smiley. John was educated in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System and graduated from Tompkins High School in 1965. Following high school, John entered The United States Air Force in July 1965. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and stationed in Germany, Turkey, California, North Carolina, and North Dakota.
On August 16, 1969, he was joined in holy matrimony to Evelyn Powell. To this union was born, John Wesley Smiley IV in 1971 and Candice Alanna Smiley in 1975. The family traveled together for many years until his retirement after 26 years of service. In 1991, they returned to Savannah, Georgia. John loved fishing, dancing, singing riding motorcycles, spending quality time with family. John was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James Small.
John entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 20, 2020. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years: Evelyn P. Smiley; two children: John W. Smiley, IV and Candice A. Martin (Jodey); two granddaughters: Keyonna J. Smiley and Breyonna S. Smiley; sisters: Theresa Peters, Carol Ann Smiley, and Angela Blalock (David); brothers: Vincent Smiley, Richard Small (Veronica), and Phillip Small; Father-in-law: Elijah J. Powell, Sr; brother-in-laws: Elijah J. Powell, Jr (Debra) and Euland Powell; sister-in-laws: Mary A. Lanier (Terry) and Yolanda R. Lanier; a host of uncles, aunties, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
