Mr. Elijah J. Powell, Sr., 91 , passed away Thursday, April 8, 2021. He was born February 7, 1930 in Blakely, Georgia to Mr. Nathan Powell and Mrs. Nancy Battle Powell. He was the eighth child of thirteen children. Both parents and all his siblings, Ulysses Powell, Evalena Powell Harris, Annie Lee Powell Scott, David Powell, Joseph Powell, Juanita Powell Williams, Thomas Powell, Irene Powell Scott, Homer D. Powell, Mary Lee Powell Brown, Vivian Ruth Powell Brown and Nathan Powell, Jr., preceded him in death.
Mr. Elijah James Powell, Sr. lived in Savannah, Georgia for the past 70 years. He was a graduate of Alfred E. Beach High school and a U.S. Army veteran. He served and fought in the Korean War. Mr. Powell was later employed by Union Camp (now International Paper) for 39 years and he never missed a day from work. He was a faithful founding member of New Mount Zion Baptist Church for 55 years where he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board and in many other capacities including Sunday School Teacher and Bible Study Teacher. After retirement, Mr. Powell also became very active in the Carver Village community joining the Carver Heights Neighborhood Organization. He was a supervisor in Operation Clean Sweep working with young people ages 12-16 cutting lawns and picking up debris. He also delivered Meals on Wheels to other seniors in the neighborhood.
Mr. Elijah James Powell, S. married Mrs. Eva Mae Watson Powell in 1948 and to this union, they were blessed with six children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Eva Mae Watson Powell, his oldest son, Mr. Emory Lee Powell and his youngest son, Mr. Euland Joby Powell.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Mrs. Evelyn P. Smiley, Mr. Elijah James (Debra) Powell, Jr., Mrs. Mary A. (Terry) Lanier and Ms. Yolanda R. Powell Lanier, seven grandchildren, Mr. John Wesley Smiley, IV, Mrs. Candice A. (Jodey) Martin, Mr. Elijah James (Charlene) Powell, III, Mr. Kevin Thomas (Kelli) Powell, Mr. Anthony Michael Lanier, II, Mr. Terry Bernard Lanier, Jr. and Zac'cai Rassaun Powell; five grandchildren, Miss Keyonna Smiley, Miss Breyonna Smiley, Anthony Michael Lanier, III, Khloe Mae Lanier, Elijah James Powell, IV and a host of nieces nephews, extended family members and friends
Graveside services will be held 11:00am Saturday April 17, 2021 at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Public viewing Friday April 16, 2021 from 3-6:00pm at the Chapel of Bynes-Royall. Masks and Social Distancing are required.
