“When peace like a River attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll,
Whatever my lot, THOU has taught me to say;
it is well, it is well, with my soul,”
The Jennings Family officially announces,
The Obsequies for
Mr. Earl Melvin Jennings
With tremendous sorrow, we bow to the will of our Heavenly Father as we humbly announced the unforeseen, yet triumphant journey of our beloved,
Mr. Earl Melvin Jennings
In the timeless echoes of eternity, amidst the whispers of the celestial realm, the immortal words of Jesus resound; “Jesus said unto him, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me though he were dead’ yet shall he live and whosoever livery and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this.
Mr. Earl Melvin Jennings, legacy is etched in the tapestry of our hearts, May the grace of God, which glowed abundantly through Mr. Earl Melvin Jennings be a balm to our spirits in this time of mourning.
Let us honor his memory with grace and gratitude, knowing that his spirit dwells eternally in the embrace of God, our Father.
“The Heavens Declared The Glory Of God, And The Sky Proclaims The Work Of His Hands” Psalm 19:1
Earl Melvin Jennings was born on February 23, 1938, in Savannah, Georgia, to the loving union of Ervin Jennings, Sr. and Gertrude Hayes Jennings. He was the third eldest of six children born where love knew no bounds; he was always surrounded and nurtured by love and was taught that there is no greater love than the love of God. He demonstrated his love for the Lord and the core values of love throughout his life as he lived with great dignity and grace. Early in his youth, Earl was baptized at First Bryan Missionary Baptist Church in Yamacraw Village, a sanctuary so wrapped in the family tapestry that his older brother, Ervin Jr., later became the pastor.
Earl received his education in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. He graduated from Alfred Ely Beach High School in the Class of 1957. He was a true alumnus, participating in functions and activities and supporting his school throughout his adult life.
Earl learned an exceptional trade and was blessed with gifted hands. He had a unique vision for decorating and design. He performed such amazing handiwork in all types of window treatments. His specialty was Draperies and Valances. He was the Founder, owner, and operator of The House of Interior Design. His labor was so spectacular that even to this day, his work remains showcased in multiple establishments and homes throughout Chatham County including: Savannah City Hall, Johnny Mercer Theater, Savannah State University, and his alma mater, Alfred E. Beach High School Auditorium.
In addition to his professional and spiritual work, Earl carried an attribute throughout his life: always showing kindness and never saying no to his family. As a selfless teacher, Earl freely shared his knowledge of construction and interior design with family and friends, and he often trained them by example. Earl was a great tenor singer and a member of the Richard M. Williams Choir and Mass Choir. He was the president of the Savannah Concert Chorale, and his sister Jernell was the Founder. Earl traveled to various parts of the United States and abroad to Paris and Germany. He cruised to Mexico, Cayman Island, and Jamaica as he experienced hiking the world-famous Dunns River Falls, known for its unique tiered waterfalls that cascade into the Caribbean Sea.
On Friday, March 14, 2025, at 11:28 pm., Earl peacefully passed away while holding his youngest brother’s hands surrounded by family. A scripture Earl quoted in his later years was Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” Earl was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Gwendolyn Jennings, Betty Fox, and Jernell Ferguson, and a brother, Reverend Ervin Jennings Jr.
Earl is survived by his brother Verner (Gertrude) Jennings of Savannah, Georgia, and his beloved nieces, nephews, and godsons, whom he cherished as his own children. He had a significant role in their lives, offering love, guidance, and support that will forever be remembered and missed, along with a host of relatives and friends.
