Herbert
Blount
Feb 28, 1942 — May 16, 2016
Herbert Arthur Blount was born on February 28, 1942, to William, Sr. and Lula E. Blount in Savannah, Georgia. He attended Chatham County Public Schools and graduated from A. E. Beach High School in 1959. He began his lifelong devotion to service in his youth as crucifer and trainer of acolytes at St. Matthews Episcopal Church. In the fall of 1959, he enrolled at Savannah State University and matriculated for two years; leaving for four years to join and honorably serve in the U. S. Air Force. Upon his return to Savannah State University, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, using his invaluable knowledge and experience to forge an esteemed and award-winning career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons as a counselor at numerous prisons across the country. He returned home to Savannah to complete his career in nearby Estill, South Carolina, and spent a portion of his retirement as a substitute teacher until health challenges forced him to fully retire from public life. His passing on May 16, 2016 comes after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
While his parents have preceded him in death, Herbert leaves to mourn a daughter, Leslie Blount, brother William Blount, Jr. - both of New York, dear friend Betty Burnett of Savannah, Georgia, nephew Marlon Jackson of Florida, nieces Kimberly and Stephanie Blount of New York, and a host of cousins, devoted friends and surrogate family members, most notably his beloved brother in spirit, William J. Day, Jr.
Funeral arrangements are being made by Bynes-Royall Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association via "The Herbert A. Blount Memorial Page."
