Mrs. Mary A. Lavant 81, of Savannah, Georgia was born on March 12, 1937 to the late Leroy Bernard Baker and Sadie Lloyd Baker. Mary Alice received her education in the Savannah Chatham County Public School System. She graduated from Alfred Ely Beach High School in the Class of 1957. She worked as a cosmetologist at Hattie Mayes Beauty Salon and was employed as a domestic engineer "custodian" for the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System for over 28 years.
On December 29, 1978, she was joined in holy matrimony to Mr. Virgil Lavant. No children were born to this union. Mary Alice was a devoted and loving wife to her late husband Virgil Lavant. Moreover, she was a caring stepmother, step grandmother, aunt, sister, neighbor and friend until her death. Her hobbies were conversing with people, making ceramics, knitting, crocheting, shopping, traveling, and planting flowers. Most importantly, she loved life and spending time with family and friends. She defended herself and family by not letting anyone get in her way to belittle her. Mary Alice was truly a force to be reckoned with overall!
At an early age, she was baptized and molded as a young women in St. Peters A.M.E. Church. She sang in the choir and was president of St. Peters A.M.E. Church Junior Choir. Mary Alice was a faithful servant and pray warrior who was seeking the lord's will for her life; she joined the Annie Scott Grant WMS and Stewardess Board at her church. She enjoyed praising and worshipping God. Socially, she joined community organizations: the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation, the Sisterhood Association of Tatemville, Tatemville Golden Age Center, and Moses Jackson Golden Age Center. She received the Volunteer of the Year 2017 Award from the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation, Inc. for her outstanding commitment as a volunteer greeter at the Beach Institute. She was committed to testifying, praying for others, and sharing the word of God with family, friends and people encouraging them to have faith in God.
The Lord called her home on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at St. Joseph's/Candler Hospital after a short illness surrounded by her loving family.
