Obituary for Helen B. Hudson
Born April 11, 1946 in Girard, Georgia, Helen Barbara Gaines Hudson grew up in Savannah, Ga. where she attended Chatham County public schools and attended Sunday School at Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church. In her childhood years, she formed a lifelong friendship with Rose Mary Odom Williams, amongst many others.
It was during these years, she met Hezekiah Hudson, Jr. who became the love of her life and her husband in February 1966. After her marriage to Hezekiah, she joined St. John Baptist Church, the Mighty Fortress, and began a life with him. From that union, four children were born: Andrea, Sheleta, Deidre, and H. Bryan.
She attended nursing school at Memorial Medical Center. The picture of her graduating class remains on display at Memorial to this day. After her successful studies and graduation, she became employed by St. Joseph’s Hospital. She retired from St. Joseph’s, due to disability after twenty-five years of dutiful service. It was at St. Joseph’s where she met her faithful friend, Ruth Robbins, and other very loyal co-workers who remained close to her until the very end.
After retirement, Helen continued her endearing care and service to others. Her heart always bent to those in need where she filled a role as nurse, caretaker, adviser, and friend. Anyone who crossed her path learned of her wit, her charm, and her love of enriching people’s lives in their times of need.
On the morning of Saturday, October 19, 2019, the Lord called Helen home after a tireless series of illnesses. Helen leaves to mourn a loving husband of 53 years, Hezekiah Hudson, Jr.; her children: Andrea Hudson-Tomblin, Sheleta Young (Byron), Deidre Nail (Kevin), Hezekiah Bryan Hudson; nine grandchildren and one great-grand; a mother-in-law, Isabell Bryan Hudson; a brother-in-law, Rev.
